Get on the Air with Us
Joining SAGMRS is free. All you need is an FCC GMRS license and a radio. Here's everything you need to get started.
Step 1
Get Your FCC License
GMRS requires an FCC license — but it's easier than you think. No exam required. A single license covers your entire immediate family for 10 years and costs $35.
Create an FCC Account
Go to the FCC's Universal Licensing System (ULS) at wireless.fcc.gov and create a free account. You'll need a valid email address.
Apply for a GMRS License
In ULS, select 'Apply for a New License' and choose the GMRS service. Fill out the short application — it takes about 10 minutes.
Pay the $35 Fee
Pay the one-time $35 application fee online. Your license is valid for 10 years and covers your entire immediate family.
Receive Your Callsign
Most licenses are granted within a few days. You'll receive your callsign by email. You're now legal to operate on GMRS frequencies.
Step 2
Get a Radio
Any FCC Part 95E-certified GMRS radio will work on our repeaters. You don't need anything expensive to get started — many operators begin with a handheld radio under $50.
Handheld (HT)
Great for getting started. Brands like Midland, Wouxun, and BTECH make solid GMRS handhelds. Look for models that support repeater offset and CTCSS tones.
Mobile Radio
A mobile radio mounted in your vehicle gives you more power and better range. Ideal for convoy communication and commuting.
Base Station
A base station at home gives you the best coverage and is great for emergency preparedness. Pair it with an outdoor antenna for maximum range.
Step 3
Join the Community
Once you're licensed and have a radio, jump into the community. Program your radio with our repeater frequencies and check in on the next Wednesday night net.
